Southern names finalists for AD job

Southern names finalists for AD job

Southern University has narrowed its search for a new Athletic Director to three candidates. The list includes John Robinson, Paula Jackson and former SU athletic director Floyd Kerr.

Chancellor James L. Llorens said he is pleased with the list of finalists that were selected by an athletic director search committee. Llorens said he plans to interview each of the candidates but did not set a date for the interviews nor when he would make a selection. His choice will have to go to the SU Board of Supervisors for a vote.

Llorens did say, however, that he hopes to make a decision before the end of the year. Head women’s basketball coach Sandy Pugh has been the interim athletic director since May.

Robinson is the executive director of student academic enhancement services at Texas Southern University in Houston.

Dec 9, 2011 8 p.m. John Waters Christmas $50

Like a wayward Santa for the Christmas obsessed, John Waters - legendary filmmaker (“Pink Flamingos,” “Hairspray,” “A Dirty Shame”), raconteur and author of the bestselling book, Role Models - cruises into town with his sleigh full of sticks and stones this December spreading yuletide cheer and lunacy with his critically acclaimed one-man show, “A John Waters Christmas”.  Torn between capitalism and anarchy, Waters feels “Christmas crazy” this year, “needy, greedy, horny for presents and filled with an unnatural desire to please.”  His rapid-fire monologue explores and explodes the traditional holiday rituals and traditions as he shares his religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of real life holiday horror stories.  Delving into his passion for lunatic exploitation Christmas movies and the unhealthy urge to remake all his own films into seasonal children’s classics, “The Pope of Trash” will give you a Joyeaux Noel like no other.

Come visit the Bald Eagle at the Zoo

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is thrilled to announce that a new visitor at the zoo, a bald eagle. Visit today and find the eagle’s new exhibit located across from L’aquarium de Louisiane.

“The bald eagle’s story is an inspiration and example of what people can accomplish when working together to save and conserve wildlife,” said Zoo Director Phil Frost. “We are honored to have one at the Zoo so people may see this incredible animal up-close.”

The bald eagle was officially adopted as the U.S. national emblem on June 20, 1782. Its wingspan reaches 6-8 feet, and they often mate for life and use the same nest in a tall tree year after year. Their impressive nests can reach five feet across and weigh 4,000 lbs.

The story of this bird and its plight (and subsequent comeback) in the wild is a dramatic one. Many decades ago, the use of the pesticide DDT poisoned the eagles’ foods and weakened eggshells, making them too thin to support the weight of brooding parents.

St. George Fire station re-opens

St. George Fire station re-opens

The St. George Fire Department’s station at 7027 Antioch Road has re-opened.

The Station now houses an engine and a ladder truck and their respective crews following an almost year-long expansion, reconstruction and modernization project. The modifications to the station were necessary to accommodate the ladder company moved there from George O’Neal Rd. The $911,000 project was funded through the District’s Capital Improvements Program.

The move strengthened the Department’s ratings position by placing the ladder company in its optimum location to serve the area today and into the future.

The station was originally built in 1975, as St. George’s third fire station. At that time, St. George was a volunteer organization. The station housed a fire engine and a tanker truck and other equipment. Volunteers would drive the apparatus to the fire and be met on the scene by other volunteer firefighters.

As the Department grew, part-time and full-time firefighters were hired and, eventually staffed the station around the clock. Prior to its re-construction, the station housed four firefighters.

The completion of this project makes six of St.
