BRCC Awarded for "Geaux Green" Event

Baton Rouge, LA– The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has selected Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) to receive an Environmental Leader Program (ELP) Award in the Colleges and Universities Pollution Prevention category.

The ELP Award is given to outstanding Louisiana citizens for exceptional leadership and advocacy in raising public awareness about environmental and human health issues through environmental education, advocacy, environmental research and program development, and pollution prevention and waste reduction efforts.

BRCC was selected to receive an award for their “Geaux Green” event that was held April 18, 2012, on the BRCC campus.

“Geaux Green” is a community environmental outreach/sustainability event in association with Earth Day. The event was sponsored by the BRCC Sustainability Quality Team, Green Bears Environmental Club, Business Club, Campus Recycling, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Division faculty.

Corporate and community partners included Habitat for Humanity, the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC), and Plato’s Closet.

The goal of the event was to educate the student body and local community about green practices/strategies and raise awareness about the importance of sustainability. These outreach efforts were designed to change attitudes and behaviors of the BRCC community.

Interactive display stations manned by students, faculty, staff, and community partners provided informative participatory activities highlighting sustainability practices.

“The Geaux Green Event was an innovative approach to educating the BRCC campus and community about green practices and sustainability,” said Laura Younger, department chair for the STEM division at BRCC.

“The team plans to offer the event annually and expand the project further by involving more campus units, and more student and community participants,” said Younger.

“BRCC is a leader in helping our community GEAUX GREEN!”

The ELP Awards Ceremony will be held on Mar. 13 at 1:30 p.m., in the Oliver Pollock Room at the DEQ Conference Center, 602 North 5th Street in Baton Rouge.
