Two dead in murder-suicide at Baton Rouge restaurant

Two men were shot and killed Friday afternoon in a murder-suicide at T.J. Ribs on Acadian.

Police say Raymond Levie and Shawn Jones were sitting at a table eating together when Jones pulled out a gun and shot Levie multiple times before turning the gun on himself.

It happened at 5:30 p.m. when police say Jones began firing in front of several employees and patrons. Several witnesses on the scene describe chaos inside the restaurant.

"It sounded like balloons popping and everyone yelling get down and the next thing I knew is what am I going to do now," said Curtis Habey who was just a few tables away.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Levie's girlfriend was the sister of the alleged shooter, Shawn Jones. The motive for the shooting is unknown.

Police are looking at surveillance tape to determine the chain of events. Levie worked for the EBR Coroner's Office.

Testimony begins in Nelson federal trial

Testimony begins in Nelson federal trial

Testimony in the federal trial of former New Roads mayor Tommy Nelson began Wednesday morning.

Nelson is the third public official to be brought into court following a four-year investigation by the FBI.

He is being painted as a greedy mayor who sold his office for cash and Saints tickets.

Nelson and his attorneys just sat on their side of the courtroom while prosecutors hammered away at their version of the story.

It's all about a fictitious enterprise known as Cipher 5000, a cleaning agent for household garbage cans.

Prosecutors said Nelson accepted cash and luxury hotel rooms in exchange for his support of the Cipher product in New Roads.

They even showed the jury an ad taken out in the Pointe Coupee Banner newspaper about an ordinance that would promote Cipher 5000.

The whole question in this trial is if the jury believes Nelson was entrapped or did it on his own.
