BRCC receives $1.25 million Upward Bound Grant | Community Spirit
Baton Rouge -- The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Baton Rouge Community College’s Upward Bound Program (BRCC UB) a $1.25 million grant through 2017.
Upward Bound is one of eight federal TRIO Programs offered through the federal Department of Education that helps low income, first generation college students and those with disabilities attend college. BRCC was awarded the grant partially based on prior experience points that are awarded for successful completion of program objectives.
The recent funding will allow the Upward Bound Program at BRCC to continue serving 55 disadvantaged students each year from McKinley Sr. High School and Istrouma High School.
“I am inspired by our students and their commitment to the Upward Bound learning community and to their future,” said Darica Simon, Upward Bound Program Director. “We are committed to tough cases by working in target areas that are plagued with barriers that can and often prevent students from completing high school and enrolling in college.”
Some of the services offered by BRCC UB include Saturday Academies and a six-week Summer Academy that includes classes in English composition and literature, laboratory science, mathematics and Spanish. Other services include tutoring, academic and career advising, assistance in applying for college and for financial aid, college visits, cultural field trips, ACT preparation, summer career internships, a summer bridge program for graduating seniors and a trip to a major city at the conclusion of summer academy.
The ultimate goal of every Upward Bound TRIO Program is for its student to graduate from college, and the BRCC Upward Bound Program is well on track to achieving this goal. 100 percent of the students from the target schools who participated in the BRCC UB program with an expected graduation date in 2010 and 2011 graduated; which exceeds both the parish (62 percent) and state (70 percent) graduation rates. 100 percent of the 2010 BRCC UB graduates re-enrolled in college during the Fall 2011 Semester. 90 percent of the 2011 BRCC UB graduates enrolled during the Fall 2011 Semester.
