Roemer proposes seven steps to fix 'corrupt' campaign finances

Roemer proposes seven steps to fix 'corrupt' campaign finances

Former Republican Presidential Candidate and former Louisiana Governor  Buddy Roemer says  the campaign finance system in this country needs to be fixed. He's created seven proposals that he says will do it.

Roemer spoke at  the Baton Rouge Press Club on Monday July 30.

He says most campaigns are financed by special interests groups resulting in a "corrupt" system.  The seven steps include:

1. Full disclosure of all  campaign contributions and expenditures.

2. 48-hour reporting for all transactions in the political market

3. No financial contributions allowed from registered lobbyists.

4. PAC Committee contributions should equal that of individual contributions.  Individual is $2,500. PAC is $5,000

5. Independent non-coordinated efforts should be defined by Congress.

6. Lobbying by Congressional retiring members is disalllowed for five years post-retirement.

7.  Congress should enact criminal penalties for those in violation of the 6 proposals.

He says so far 28 Senators and about 95 members of the House support these measures.

Buddy Roemer: I hope that Jim Bernhard is involved going forward

Former Presidential Candidate and Former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer recently spoke about the impending sale of the Shaw Group. Roemer is a former member of Shaw's Board of Directors.

At the Press Club Monday, he said "I think the Shaw Group is important to Louisiana in terms of jobs and performance. I would say there will be some adjustments, but that won't happen overnight. I hope that Jim  Bernhard  is involved going forward.  I know that Jim will keep the best and brightest here if he can. I think that he will do that. That company is such a compliment to Jim Bernhard. The heart of that company was Jim Bernhard.  I think Jim has been shaken a little bit, disturbed by the difficulty of advancing nuclear power as it looked like we were going to be able to do five or six or 10 years ago.  The Japan problem last year was the beginning of this event that happened over the weekend."

Council District 9 Public Meeting Monday to discuss road projects

Council District 9 Public Meeting Monday to discuss road projects

From Mayor Kip Holden's office

A public meeting will be held on Monday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m. to update residents about several ongoing road projects in Metro Council District 9 represented by Councilman Joel Boé.

The meeting will be held at the St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church Fellowship Hall at 16166 South Harrell’s Ferry Road.

Topics of discussion include the ongoing Green Light Programs that affect O’Neal Lane, South Harrell’s Ferry Road and Millerville Road. There will also be an update on the status of the Woodlake Bridge closure.

Northbound and southbound left-turn movements from O’Neal Lane onto South Harrell’s Ferry Road have been restricted since July 16 as part of the next phase of a Green Light Plan project to widen the roadway.  Plans call for the restrictions of left-turn movement to remain in place for an anticipated duration of six months, weather permitting.

The left-turn restrictions are necessary in order for crews to widen the intersection at O’Neal Lane and South Harrell’s Ferry Road as part of the work on this phase of construction on the Southeast Area Group project.

BR Olympic Torchbearer: It brings you to tears

BR Olympic Torchbearer: It brings you to tears

"When the two torch runners meet and touch the tip of their torches that action is actually called the kiss where two torches kiss each other and the flame of the previous runner is extinguished and the flame is given to the next torch runner.>

Baton Rouge Native John Eric James was one of the next runners in the recent Olympic Torch Relay in the United Kingdom.

"My moment of having the kiss is one of the most exciting parts of that because at that moment you are the only one carrying the Olympic flame," James says.

James was one of 8,000 torchbearers as the flame travelled to more than 1,000 cities before reaching its final destination-- the Summer Olympic Games in London.

"I'm a small town guy from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and here I am part of the Olympic experience in London," James says. "It was overly exciting.

Now living in Michigan, he was selected by his colleagues at Dow Chemical Company --2500 employees were nominated. Ten were chosen.

James grew up right here in north Baton Rouge,  graduating from Baton Rouge High School and Southern University. His family says they couldn't be prouder.
