Weekend lane closures on I-10 Essen Eastbound

Several weekend traffic impacts are slated for eastbound I-10 between the I-10/I-12 split and Essen Lane, including closures at the Essen Lane off-ramp and the flyover connecting I-12 to eastbound I-10. The work is significant because it marks another milestone in the Geaux Wider Program, and in particular is a milestone for the I-10 project as construction crews begin building the new eastbound lanes of I-10 in this area.

Weather permitting, from 9 p.m. on Friday, July 13, until 5 a.m. on Monday, July 16, motorists can expect the following traffic impacts in this area:

This day-long event will be held in the Magnolia Pavilion, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Join us for an Open House event beginning at 10 a.m., which will include an Orientation, Campus Tours, Table Browsing, Advising Sessions and more.

Book Signing wil be held for Mary Manhein’s “Floating Souls"

BATON ROUGE – Mary H. Manhein, the internationally known head of LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services, or FACES, Lab, will be signing copies of her first murder mystery, “Floating Souls: The Canal Murders,” now available from Margaret Media Inc., on Saturday, July 14, from 1-3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, located at 7707 Bluebonnet Boulevard in Perkins Rowe in Baton Rouge.

Jimmy John's opening new location downtown

Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is opening a new location in downtown Baton Rouge at Third and Convention Street near the state parking garage.  The new store is scheduled to open in October.

The new store will employ about 25 to 35 people. Officials will begin hiring in September.

Owner Kyle Wilkinson tells 9News Neighborhoods he's excited.

"It's a location we've been trying to find for awhile now and our customers have been asking us to put one down there so we're  excited," Wilkinson says.  "It's going to be great."

Back to School Community Rally set for July 21

Restoring Hearts Outreach Center (RHOC) is partnering with Baton Rouge Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle to host its Second Annual Back to School Community Rally.  The rally is scheduled for July 21 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the BREC Center located at 7505 Independence Blvd in Baton Rouge. 

The rally will focus on bringing awareness to the services that RHOC provides, as well as other services that are available in the community.  Participants will be speaking to the youth on topics such as: peer pressure, bullying, HIV awareness and family domestic violence.  East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, will be a speaker at the rally; he will be speaking to the youth about bullying.

Burns named head of LSU's ROTC program

 

BATON ROUGE – Lt. Col. Lawrence M. Burns assumed duties as LSU's professor of military science in July, coming to the university after serving as an Advanced Operations Course instructor at the Command and General Staff College and a signal observer/trainer for Operations Group Sierra as part of the Mission Command Training Program at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Burns enlisted in the Louisiana Army National Guard in August 1987 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army on May 20, 1993, through the Tulane University Army ROTC program. Burns received is bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Orleans and a master’s degree in management from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Burns’s military education includes Single Channel Radio Operator’s Advanced Individual Training, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Primary Leadership Development Course, Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Staff School and Command and General Staff College.
