Visitation Friday for former LSU public relations director

LSU is mourning the loss of Oscar Gabriel Richard III, former LSU director of public relations and member of LSU’s Ole War Skule Hall of Honor and the Manship School’s Hall of Fame.

Richard died Tuesday, May 7, at the age of 91.

Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street in Baton Rouge, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church with a funeral mass following at 1 p.m.

In his honor, LSU Interim System President and Chancellor William Jenkins will have the American flag on the Parade Ground flown at half-staff until Saturday at sundown.

The day after his graduation from LSU’s School of Journalism (now the Manship School of Mass Communication) in June 1942, Richard enrolled as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, was selected as a bombardier and eventually assigned to the 384th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, stationed at Grafton Underwood, England.

House backs $25 billion budget compromise

MELINDA DESLATTE

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - After days of closed-door negotiations, the
Louisiana House has backed a nearly $25 billion budget that deeply
diverges from spending plans recommended by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Lawmakers objected to Jindal's proposal to use $500 million in
uncertain financing from property sales, legal settlements, fund sweeps
and other items that haven't yet happened and that would only drum up
money for one year.

The House compromise approved Friday would replace those dollars with
money raised from trimming tax break programs, cuts to state agencies
and $200 million expected from a tax amnesty program.

A 93-5 vote sent the budget to the Senate.

The bipartisan plan was a rare showing of independence for lawmakers
who traditionally follow the governor's lead. Jindal opposes pieces of
the package that he considers a tax hike.
