Officials debuting new absentee voting system

Officials debuting new absentee voting system

A demonstration of the new ballot scanning equipment is being held today, Aug. 1 in the auditorium of the Secretary of State’s Office , 8585 Archives Avenue in Baton Rouge. Secretary of State and East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters staff members will be among the first group of trainees.

The absentee voting system will be implemented and deployed for use in the Oct. 22 election. The new and existing equipment will be merged to create one system for absentee by mail voting, early voting and election day voting. This will allow consistency in training and procedures for election officials across the state. The new scanning system will improve the process for counting paper ballots and allows the parish boards of election supervisors to review the intent of each voted ballot to make determinations on the voter’s intent as required by law.

The new system was funded with grant money from the Help America Vote Act. For more information about the Secretary of State’s Elections Division, visit www.GeauxVote.com or call (225) 922-0900.
